About Sandy Point Shoal Lighthouse
Sandy Point Shoal Light is a three-story brick structure built on a caisson foundation. Erected in 1883, it stands 11 meters tall with its focal plane at 15.5 meters. The lighthouse emits a white light, the characteristic of which has changed over time with different power sources. Originally lit in 1883, its power was updated from oil wicks to incandescent oil vapor in 1913, and then to electricity in 1929. The current illumination is provided by solar panels attached to the structure's roof. The light was discontinued in June 2019 due to structural deterioration.
