About Sandy Point Lighthouse
The Sandy Point Lighthouse, built in 1880, is a square pyramidal tower constructed of wood and concrete, standing 9 meters tall. It is topped with a lantern and gallery and rests on a square concrete pier. The original lighthouse at this site was destroyed by fire in 1878. The current tower was moved to a new pier in 1903. It ceased operations in 1996 and was subsequently conveyed to a preservation consortium in 2004. A restoration project was completed in 2008, with further repairs funded by community efforts, including a competition win in 2015.
Why it matters: This lighthouse marks the east side of Shelburne Harbour, guiding vessels approaching the town. Community efforts have ensured its preservation following its deactivation.
