About Sandvikodden Lighthouse
Also known as: Sandvikodden (Sandvigodden)
Sandvikodden Lighthouse, built in 1844, is a square cylindrical masonry tower standing 17 meters tall. Its white exterior is topped by a dark red lantern. The structure is joined to a 2-1/2 story masonry keeper's house. It is situated on the eastern corner of Hisøy island, marking the west side of the entrance to the Galtesund strait leading to Arendal. Although it ceased operations in 1934 and was replaced by a new tower, the lighthouse was listed for sale in late 2014.
Why it matters: The lighthouse was funded by local shipowners and served as a community-supported aid to navigation.
