Sakushima Kō East Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Sakushima Kō East Lighthouse
Sakushima Kō East is an 8-meter concrete post structure situated off the southeastern tip of Sakushima island in Chita Bay. It is painted with its upper half yellow and its lower half black, and is mounted on a round concrete pier connected to a square, single-story equipment shelter. The light emits a white flash every 15 seconds from a focal height of 10 meters. This marker extends from a submerged reef near the southeastern end of Sakushima, an island located about 4 km east of Minamichita on the Chita Peninsula and a similar distance south of Isshiki on the mainland. The site is accessible by boat, but the tower itself is closed to visitors.
Why it matters: This light warns mariners of a reef extending from Sakushima's southeastern tip, helping to prevent groundings in the waters between the Chita Peninsula and the mainland.
