About Saint-Dénis d'Oléron Lighthouses Lighthouse
Constructed of stone in 1836, this cylindrical tower stands 46 meters tall with its lantern and gallery rising from the center of a circular two-story keeper's house. The lighthouse displays black and white horizontal bands and was first lit in the same year it was built. Its light emits a white flash every 10 seconds, visible for nearly 19 nautical miles. The tower's focal height reaches 50 meters above sea level. It was staffed until 1999 and underwent restoration in 2007. The site is now open to the public.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is indispensable for guiding vessels navigating the waters off the northwestern tip of the Île d'Oléron, marking a critical turning point for coastal shipping. It preserves and actively uses one of the world's oldest 1st order Fresnel lenses.
