About Rumoi South Breakwater Lighthouse
A red, cylindrical concrete tower 14 meters high stands at the end of the south breakwater in Rumoi, Hokkaido Prefecture. This structure, built in 1974, has a focal height of 16 meters and emits a red flash every three seconds. The original lighthouse was established in 1932, and when the breakwater was extended in 1974, the lantern and lens from the earlier light were transferred to the new tower. The lighthouse guides vessels approaching the port of Rumoi, which is 0.8 kilometers away.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is important for maritime traffic entering and exiting the port of Rumoi, marking the end of the south breakwater and preventing collisions with its submerged extension.
