About Rocky Point Lighthouse
Also known as: Rocky Point (Harbour Breton)
A 7.5-meter cylindrical cast iron tower with red and white horizontal bands marks Rocky Point, situated on the south side of the entrance to Harbour Breton. First lit in 1881, the structure stands 16 meters above sea level and emits a white flash every 4 seconds, visible for 12.2 nautical miles. The original lighthouse was destroyed by fire in 1881 and replaced that same year. Ownership transferred to the Town of Harbour Breton in 2014. The site is open for visitors, though access to the tower is restricted.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's heritage designation in 2016 underscores its cultural significance as a symbol of the community's maritime connection. It provides a critical visual cue for vessels navigating the entrance to Harbour Breton.
