About Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse
Also known as: Roanoke Marshes (replica)
The Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, a replica of an 1858 screw-pile structure, was built in 2004. This tower, painted white with red trim, stands near Manteo, North Carolina, on the Roanoke Sound. It continues the navigational legacy of its predecessor, which guided vessels through the shallow marshy channels of the Inner Banks. The current lighthouse serves as an active aid to navigation and also functions as a museum, allowing visitors to experience coastal history.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is important for guiding vessels through the often-shifting shoals and shallow depths of the Roanoke Sound, preserving a unique screw-pile architectural style.
