Location & Light Range
About Ringholmen Lighthouse
Ringholmen Lighthouse was built in 1876 as a cylindrical concrete tower painted red. This 10-meter-tall structure stands on a small island in the Nyleia channel, northeast of Bomlø, near Fitjar. The lighthouse features a hexagonal cylindrical tower integrated with a two-and-a-half-story keeper's house. It was first lit in 1876 and emitted two white, red, or green flashes every 8 seconds, with a geographic range of 7.3 nautical miles. The lighthouse ceased official operations in 1918, and its lantern was removed. Shortly after deactivation, the structure became a private residence.
Why it matters: The lighthouse was significant for navigating the Nyleia channel, an important waterway for local shipping and fishing. Its unique integration of a tower and keeper's house represents late 19th-century Norwegian lighthouse architecture.
