About Rødtangen Lighthouse
Established in 1840, Rødtangen lighthouse marked the eastern side of the entrance to the Drammensfjord. The structure comprised a 1-1/2 story wood house with a small square lantern room attached to its front, positioned a few feet above ground. This design combined the keeper's dwelling with the light. The lighthouse remained operational for nearly six decades before its deactivation in 1897. The original house now serves as a private residence. Around the year 2000, a replica of the original fog bell tower was constructed.
Why it matters: The lighthouse was important for vessels navigating the entrance to the Drammensfjord. Its integrated design represents a distinctive approach to lighthouse construction.
