About Quaker Island Lighthouse
This lighthouse stands on an uninhabited island at the north end of Mahone Bay, guiding vessels into Chester Harbour. The current cylindrical fiberglass tower, painted white with a red band at the top, was first lit in 1981. It stands 6 meters tall, with the light positioned at a focal height of 31 meters. The light emits a single red flash every 4 seconds, visible for 15.5 nautical miles. The station's history includes an earlier wooden tower with a keeper's house, built in 1883, which burned down in 1938 and was temporarily replaced by a skeletal tower.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is essential for vessels navigating the approach to Chester Harbour, marking the entrance and ensuring safe passage within Mahone Bay.
