About Pulau Layangan (Sungai Papar) Lighthouse
This 9-meter concrete lighthouse, built in 2007, features a square tower with red and white horizontal bands, standing on a square platform. Its white light flashes once every 10 seconds, providing a geographic range of 10 nautical miles. The structure serves as a navigational aid near the entrance of the Papar River, approximately 22.4 kilometers from Kota Kinabalu. While the site is open to the public, the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse aids vessels transiting the Sungai Papar, providing guidance for ships entering and exiting the river and helping to prevent groundings on sandbars and shallows near the mouth.
