About Pugwash Lighthouse
Also known as: #Pugwash (Fishing Point) (relocated)
Built in 1871, the Pugwash Lighthouse was a 11-meter cylindrical wooden tower. Its distinctive design featured the square tower rising schoolhouse-style from the front of a 1-1/2 story keeper's house. This architectural approach was unusual for Nova Scotia. The lighthouse ceased active service in 1962. It was later sold and moved to a farm, where it subsequently deteriorated. The structure was burned as a practice exercise by the fire department in March 2018, though its lantern was salvaged.
Why it matters: The Pugwash Lighthouse's rare schoolhouse architectural style made it a unique maritime landmark in Nova Scotia.
