About Prestøyan Lighthouse
Also known as: Prestøyan (Østre Prestøy, Brønnøysund) (?)
This wooden lighthouse, constructed in 1862, originally stood on Buholmen island before its relocation to Østre Prestøy in 1896. The structure is a square cylindrical wood tower integrated with a 1-1/2 story keeper's house. It was deactivated in 1935. On October 1, 2014, a fire damaged the lighthouse during restoration efforts, necessitating a rebuild. The site is now open to the public, though the tower remains closed.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's relocation and rebuilding after a fire highlight the ongoing importance of maritime heritage preservation. Its unique architectural design, combining a tower with a keeper's house, offers a tangible connection to historical shipping and local coastal life near Brønnøysund.
