About Port Maria Lighthouse
Also known as: Port Maria (Quiberon)
Established in 1894, the Port Maria lighthouse is situated three blocks from the waterfront in Quiberon's traditional harbor. The masonry tower, painted white with gray trim, stands 25 meters tall and rises from the center of a one-story keeper's house. Its focal height reaches 28 meters, providing a geographic range of 14.9 nautical miles. The light emits quick flashes of white, red, or green, depending on the direction of approach. Until 1962, this lighthouse served as the rear light for a navigational range, but channel shifts made it obsolete for that specific purpose.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's original function as a range light changed when a shifting channel altered its alignment, but it continues to provide general navigational guidance.
