Location & Light Range
About Port Dover West Pier Lighthouse
Constructed in 1905, this lighthouse is a square pyramidal wood tower painted white, topped with a green lantern and gallery. It stands 8.5 meters tall, with its light positioned 11 meters above the water. The structure guides vessels on Lake Erie, offering a geographic range of 10.7 nautical miles. Its light emits an occulting green signal every 4 seconds. Originally built to replace a lighthouse destroyed by fire in 1848, this current tower required repairs after a lightning strike in 1981. The site is open to the public, though the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: Designated an Ontario Heritage site in May 2016, this lighthouse preserves a link to the region's maritime history.
