Port Dalhousie Range Rear Lighthouse

About Port Dalhousie Range Rear Lighthouse
This octagonal wood tower, first lit in 1899, stands at the breakwater marking the east side of the Port Dalhousie harbor entrance. Covered by aluminum siding, the 12-meter structure replaced earlier lighthouses, including one that burned in August 1898. The station was established in 1852, with subsequent structures built in 1893 and 1899. Although its light became inactive in 1988, the City of St. Catharines took ownership in 1997. Restoration efforts in the early 2000s and again in 2010 addressed exterior repairs and repainting. The site is now open to the public, though the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: The Port Dalhousie Range Rear lighthouse guided vessels into the harbor entrance. Following its deactivation, the lighthouse became the summer headquarters for the Niagara College Sailing School, continuing its maritime connection.
