About Port Dalhousie Lighthouse
Also known as: Port Dalhousie (Range Front)
Built in 1879, the Port Dalhousie Lighthouse is a square pyramidal tower constructed of wood and painted white, with a green lantern and tower base. It stands 14 meters tall, with its light positioned 13 meters above the water. The lighthouse emits an isophase white light on a 4-second cycle, visible for 11.3 nautical miles. Located at the end of the breakwater on the east side of the harbor entrance in St. Catharines, it once marked the northern entrance to the Welland Canal. The canal's entrance was relocated in 1932, and the pier was closed and later reopened in 2015.
Why it matters: This lighthouse served as the original northern entrance marker for the Welland Canal, a significant shipping route.
