About Pointe de la Prairie Lighthouse
Also known as: Pointe de la Prairie (Île aux Coudres)
This 17-meter tall concrete and steel tower was built in 1972 on a small islet off the coast of Île aux Coudres, opposite Baie Saint-Paul. Its design features a short, round, cylindrical steel structure with a lantern room topped by a helipad, all supported by a conical concrete base. The light, first illuminated in the same year it was built, emits a white flash every 5 seconds and has a geographic range of 12.2 nautical miles. In 2004, repairs were made to the concrete base, which had begun to crumble. The lighthouse is maintained by the Canadian Coast Guard.
Why it matters: Its presence aids safe navigation for vessels transiting the St. Lawrence River, particularly in the waters surrounding Île aux Coudres and approaching Baie Saint-Paul.
