About Pointe Carleton Lighthouse
Established in 1919, the Pointe Carleton lighthouse is an octagonal concrete tower painted white, standing 12 meters tall. Its lantern, which is red, is topped by a gallery. The light emits a single green flash every 6 seconds from a focal height of 38.5 meters, visible for 16.8 nautical miles. Accessible by road from Port-Menier on Anticosti Island, the tower itself remains operational. The keeper's houses, once available as vacation rentals, have been abandoned since 2006 and are slated for demolition. While the site is open to the public, the tower interior is closed.
Why it matters: The lighthouse guides maritime traffic along the island's north coast, helping vessels avoid hazards.
