About Pointe-au-Père Lighthouse
Also known as: Pointe-au-Père (Father Point)
Constructed in 1909, the Pointe-au-Père Lighthouse is a 33-meter tall, 16-sided cylindrical concrete tower featuring eight pyramidal buttresses. Its operational light was active from 1909 until 1975, when it was replaced by a decorative light established in 2004. The lighthouse is situated on a point approximately 10 kilometers east of Rimouski, along the St. Lawrence River. It is now open to the public and operates as a maritime museum.
Why it matters: The lighthouse stands near the site of the 1914 sinking of the Empress of Ireland, a significant event in St. Lawrence River maritime history. Its unique 16-sided concrete tower design is also noteworthy.
