Placentia Area Lighthouses Lighthouse

Fl White 5s🇨🇦CAOperational

Established in 1860, this lighthouse marks the southwestern tip of Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula, south of St. Bride's. The original round brick tower underwent several modifications due to the coastal environment; it was coated with cement in 1869, clad in iron in 1885, and eventually encased in the current octagonal concrete tower in the mid-1950s after the iron rusted. The white concrete tower stands 17 meters tall with its light positioned 96 meters above sea level, emitting a single white flash every five seconds and visible for over 24 nautical miles. The lighthouse site is open to the public, though the tower itself is closed.

Why it matters: Granted Heritage status in 2015, its unique construction history demonstrates adaptation to a harsh marine environment.
