About Pite-Rönnskär Lighthouse
The Pite-Rönnskär lighthouse, a cylindrical cast iron skeletal tower, stands 37 meters tall and was first lit in 1880. Originally built in 1862 for Sandhammaren, it was deactivated there in 1891, dismantled in 1904, and meticulously rebuilt on its current island location in 1905. This tower, housing a lantern, gallery, and central cylinder, displays a white light with a single flash every 15 seconds. It guided ships approaching Piteå until its deactivation in 1958. Following a period of darkness, local residents spearheaded efforts to relight the tower in 2005, ensuring its continued presence.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is the tallest of the Heidenstam class skeletal towers and its relocation from Sandhammaren to Pite-Rönnskär highlights its adaptability. Its reactivation in 2005 by community members underscores its enduring connection to the area.
