About Pesisir Barat Regency (Indian Ocean) Lighthouses Lighthouse
This white, 16-sided cast iron tower stands 58 meters tall and has a focal height of 63 meters. Constructed in 1880, it was prefabricated in The Hague. The lighthouse emits a single white flash every 10 seconds, providing a geographic range of 20.5 nautical miles. The structure, located near Semangka Bay, is situated on the southern tip of Sumatra. It was damaged by tsunami waves from the 1883 Krakatoa eruption, which affected its first floor, but has since been repaired.
Why it matters: This lighthouse serves as a critical landfall light for vessels approaching the Sunda Strait from the east. Its unique prefabricated cast iron tower represents a notable engineering feat from the 19th century.
