About Pelee Passage Lighthouse
Also known as: Pelee Passage (relocated to Windsor)
Erected in 1902, this 21-meter cylindrical steel tower, painted white with red trim, was situated on a caisson in Lake Erie near Pelee Island. It marked the Pelee Passage. Operations ceased in 1975, leading to its disassembly in the same year. The structure was reassembled in 1980 on Riverside Drive East at Riverdale Avenue in Windsor, Ontario, facing the Detroit River across from Peche Island. Its location is about 10 kilometers east of the city's central tunnel.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's move from its former Lake Erie position to an urban park in Windsor demonstrates the safeguarding of historical structures.
