About Patos Island Lighthouse
The Patos Island Lighthouse is an active aid to navigation at Alden Point on the western tip of the island. The white, square tower stands 8 meters tall, with its light positioned 16 meters above sea level. It emits a white and red light, with a white flash on a 6-second cycle. The light has a geographic range of 9 nautical miles. Its structure covers a six-fathom shoal, with the red sector covering the area between 011 degrees 30 minutes and 059 degrees 30 minutes.
Why it matters: This station is the northernmost in the San Juan Islands and marks the division point between the eastern and western passages into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
