About Patenga Lighthouse
The Patenga Lighthouse is a square pyramidal metal tower standing 24 meters tall, painted with alternating black and white horizontal bands. Its light is positioned 20 meters above the water. Emitting a red flash every 10 seconds, its geographic range extends to 13.2 nautical miles. This structure is located on Patenga Point, near Chittagong, the nearest port being only 1 kilometer away. The site is open to the public, although the tower itself is not accessible.
Why it matters: This lighthouse marks the western entrance to the Karnaphuli estuary and Chittagong harbor, warning vessels of the dangers of Patenga Point. Its continuous operation is essential for guiding commercial traffic into one of Bangladesh's major ports.
