Pass Island Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Pass Island Lighthouse
The Pass Island Lighthouse, first illuminated in 1879, is situated on the island's summit, denoting the eastern boundary of the Hermitage Bay entry. The present concrete structure, a 9-meter-tall square pyramid with white siding and red and white horizontal bands, contains a light at a focal height of 86 meters. This light flashes white every 10 seconds (Fl W 10s). The initial lighthouse was succeeded by an octagonal structure in 1917. By 2008, the supporting station buildings were in disrepair.
Why it matters: The 1917 replacement of its original structure underscores its continued function for maritime safety in a difficult coastal area. This light serves as a primary reference point for safe entry into Hermitage Bay, with its fog signal further improving safety during periods of low visibility.
