About Oulu Cathedral Lighthouse
Also known as: Oulu Cathedral (Hietasaari Range Rear)
This structure, an octagonal cylindrical concrete tower standing 5 meters tall, was first lit in 1908. The lantern and gallery are situated at a focal height of 38 meters, providing a geographic range of 16.7 nautical miles. Originally operational, it ceased active service in 1978. Following its deactivation as an active light, it was maintained as a daybeacon until 2022. The tower is part of the Oulu Cathedral complex, located 1.5 kilometers from the nearest port.
Why it matters: Its unconventional placement atop a cathedral steeple made it a rare dual-purpose structure, serving both religious and navigational functions for the port of Oulu.
