Location & Light Range
About Ombo Lighthouse
Located on a headland on Ombo island's northwest section, near Stavanger, is the Ombo lighthouse. The structure is a square tower made of wood, 6 meters high, painted white, and features a lantern and gallery. Its light source is positioned 19.5 meters above sea level. The apparatus produces a flashing sequence of white, red, or green light every two seconds. This light is observable up to 13 nautical miles away. The present tower superseded a former 6-meter square wooden edifice.
Why it matters: This lighthouse serves as a navigation aid for safe passage around the sizable Ombo island, especially for ships entering or leaving its northwest area. The directional light, indicated by color changes within its sectors, offers specific direction, assisting vessels in bypassing hazards within the intricate coastal waters.
