About Nærøysund Lighthouse
Built in 1904, the Nærøysund Lighthouse is a 13-meter-tall wooden structure located on the north side of the Nærøysund strait. It consists of a lantern room atop a two-story keeper's house, painted light brown with a red lantern. The lighthouse's focal height is also 13 meters, and it provided a geographic range of 11.3 nautical miles. Its light characteristic was occulting white, red, and green every 6 seconds. Service ended in 1984 when it was decommissioned, though the structure was acquired by the local municipality in October 2019. The site is open to the public, but the tower remains closed.
Why it matters: The Nærøysund Lighthouse was essential for navigation through the strait that separates Vikna island from the mainland.
