About Northern Monmouth County (Sandy Hook Bay) Lighthouses Lighthouse
Established in 1856, the Waackaack Range Rear Lighthouse guided vessels through Sandy Hook Bay in Northern Monmouth County, New Jersey. The 105-foot cast iron skeletal tower, erected in 1894, marked safe passage in this active shipping lane near Keansburg. After ceasing operations in the 1950s, the tower was demolished despite local efforts to save it. The accompanying two-story keeper's house, however, remains standing and is now a private residence at 203 Creek Road.
Why it matters: The range lights were important for directing maritime traffic through the shipping lanes of Sandy Hook Bay. The surviving keeper's house provides a connection to the region's maritime history.
