New Year Island Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About New Year Island Lighthouse
A white, skeletal steel tower stands 30 meters tall on New Year Island, an isolated landmass in the Arafura Sea approximately 60 kilometers northeast of Cape Don. The lighthouse emits a single white flash every 30 seconds, with its light visible for 15.7 nautical miles. It guides vessels navigating the east end of the Cobourg Peninsula. The current structure replaced an earlier lighthouse, which was a cylindrical steel tower supported by guy wires. Access to the island and the lighthouse itself is not permitted.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is important for maritime traffic navigating the Arafura Sea, specifically guiding vessels around the eastern end of the Cobourg Peninsula.
