Location & Light Range
About Nesje Lighthouse
The current Nesje lighthouse, a cylindrical fiberglass tower standing 7.5 meters tall, was built and first lit in 2005. It replaces a station established in 1894. The tower, painted white with a red lantern roof, is situated on the northernmost point of Frøya, approximately 4 kilometers northwest of Kalvåg. Its focal height is 24 meters, and it emits a white, red, or green light that has an occulting characteristic on a 6-second cycle. The geographic range of the light is 14.1 nautical miles. While the site is accessible to the public, the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is important for navigation around the northern part of Frøya, a coastal area with many islands and skerries. Its sector light helps vessels identify safe passages and avoid submerged dangers.
