About Nanatsu Se Lighthouse
The Nanatsu Se Lighthouse, built in 1967, is a cylindrical tower standing 10 meters tall and situated 12 meters above sea level. Its structure, made of concrete and stone, features a green-painted round concrete tower mounted on a round stone pier. This lighthouse emits a single green flash every 8 seconds, with a geographic range of 11 nautical miles. The lighthouse is located just off the west end of Tsūji Shima, an island near the central north coast of Shimo Shima, within Japan's Kumamoto Prefecture. While the site is open to visitors arriving by boat, the tower itself is closed to the public.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is essential for local navigation, marking the western end of Tsūji Shima and guiding vessels through the waters off Shimo Shima's coast, particularly supporting fishing fleets and small craft.
