About Nakanosaku Kō Old West Breakwater Lighthouse
Also known as: #Nakanosaku Kō Old West Breakwater (?)
This white concrete post, standing 9 meters tall, was built in 2011 on the west breakwater of Nakanosaku's old inner harbor. It features a cylindrical tower attached to a square equipment shelter and emits a green flash every three seconds. The structure replaced an earlier navigation aid and was itself damaged by the 2011 tsunami. Following repairs, it was returned to service later that same year. Its operational period concluded in November 2019 when it was succeeded by a post light.
Why it matters: The light was essential for guiding vessels into the old inner harbor of Nakanosaku, and its rapid restoration after the 2011 tsunami highlighted its immediate importance to the local maritime community.
