About Monomoy Point Lighthouse
Also known as: Monomoy Point Lighthouse
The Monomoy Point Light station was established in 1823, with its first light housed in a wood tower atop the keeper's dwelling. The current cast-iron tower was constructed in 1849. This light guided vessels in Southeastern Massachusetts. The light was deactivated in 1923, following the opening of the Cape Cod Canal which rerouted significant maritime traffic away from this area. The keeper's house remains and is utilized for wildlife management.
Why it matters: This lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 1, 1979, and is part of the Monomoy Wilderness within the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge.
