About Mohawk Island Lighthouse
Also known as: Mohawk Island (Gull Island)
Constructed in 1848 from stone, the Mohawk Island Lighthouse comprises a tower and an attached keeper's house, both now in ruins. Its operational service concluded in 1969 after vandals damaged the lens, leading to the light's relocation to a buoy. The structure was subsequently gutted by fire. This stone tower stands 24 meters tall and once emitted a red flash every 4 seconds. The island is located about 1.5 km offshore between Mohawk Point and Rock Point, near Port Colborne.
Why it matters: Recognized as a Heritage Lighthouse, its construction marked the first project for builder John Brown.
