Built in 1867, the Middle Bluff Lighthouse is a hexagonal wood tower standing 10.5 meters tall. It features a red lantern and a gallery. The lighthouse is situated on Woody Island, east of Hervey Bay, marking the entrance to the Great Sandy Strait. The structure has undergone two restorations, first in 2000 and again in 2016, to address weather damage and vandalism. While the site is accessible to the public, the tower itself remains closed. It is located within the Great Sandy National Park.
Why it matters: The lighthouse marks the entrance to the Great Sandy Strait, a significant waterway separating Fraser Island from the mainland.
