About Matane Lighthouse
This cylindrical cast iron tower, painted white, stands 20 meters tall. The current structure was erected in 1907, though the lighthouse station was established earlier. Its lantern housing is painted red. The light ceased operation in 1951. In 1952, the Société d'Histoire de Matane purchased the station, and ownership transferred to the city in 1962. The lighthouse underwent restoration in the spring of 2019 and reopened to the public that summer. The site is now open for visitors.
Why it matters: The community's preservation efforts highlight its value beyond its original navigational purpose, serving as a tangible connection to the city's maritime past.
