Markøy Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Markøy Lighthouse
Markøy lighthouse was built in 1822 on an island at the mouth of the Grønsfjord, about 3.5 km west-northwest of Lindesnes Fyr. The original hexagonal stone tower is now reduced to its base. This structure served for a short time, becoming inactive in 1844. The island where it stands is now a bird sanctuary. In 2019, a group called Markøy Fyrs Venner was formed to manage the site with the aim of possibly rebuilding the lighthouse.
Why it matters: Markøy lighthouse was a historic twin to the second Lindesnes Fyr and offered insight into early 19th-century Norwegian coastal navigation.
