About Malmö Lighthouse
Also known as: Malmö (Inre Hamn) (Range Rear)
An octagonal stone and cast iron tower, built in 1878, stands 20 meters tall and is painted white with two narrow red horizontal bands. Originally established in 1822, the lighthouse guided vessels into Malmö's harbor. Its light produced a quick white flash every 5 seconds. The structure, featuring an octagonal cast iron tower with a lantern and gallery atop a stone base, was formerly situated on a pierhead. Operational since 1822, the station ceased active service in 1983 and is now charted as a land feature on Hjälmarekajen quay.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's unique octagonal cast iron design on a stone base, along with its distinctive coloring, makes it a notable example of 19th-century lighthouse architecture.
