Lough Corrib Lighthouse Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Lough Corrib Lighthouse Lighthouse
Built in 1772, Lough Corrib Lighthouse is a cylindrical stone tower standing 7 meters tall on a dock on the northeastern shore of Lough Corrib. Access to the watch room is via spiral stairs that wind around the tower's interior. The lighthouse was privately built and historically provided guidance on Ireland's second largest lake. It played a part in a waterway system connecting Galway to the lake via the Eglinton Canal, although this canal is now out of service. The light is currently inactive, but the site is open to the public.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is significant for its origin as a privately built aid on an inland lake and its connection to the now-defunct Eglinton Canal, which once linked Lough Corrib to Galway's maritime traffic.
