Long Point Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Long Point Lighthouse
The Long Point Lighthouse, an octagonal concrete tower, was built in 1916 and first lit that same year. Standing 31 meters tall, it emits a white flash every 8 seconds from a focal height of 29.5 meters, with a geographic range of 15.2 nautical miles. The structure includes a lantern and gallery, attached to a 1-story fog signal building, and is painted white with a red lantern. Originally equipped with a 3rd order Fresnel lens, the lighthouse underwent a significant renovation in the late 1980s to address its buried base, which was filled with concrete. The original lens has since been relocated to the Port Burwell Light.
Why it matters: This lighthouse guides vessels around the 40 km Long Point Peninsula, a hazard extending into Lake Ontario. Its history includes a notable renovation due to its base becoming buried by sand.
