Ljugarn Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Ljugarn Lighthouse
This 12-meter cylindrical metal structure, painted white, was built in 1992 and first lit that same year. It is located at the foot of the main quay in Ljugarn, a coastal town on Sweden's island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. The lighthouse displays a white or red light in sectors, cycling every 4 seconds, with a geographic range of 11.6 nautical miles. The original navigational station at this site was established in 1886, but the current tower replaced the earlier structure. This facility replaced an earlier navigational aid.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is important for guiding local fishing boats and smaller cargo vessels safely into Ljugarn's harbor, particularly due to its directional white and red light sectors. Its unique design, incorporating a water tank into the tower, makes it a distinctive architectural feature along the Gotland coast.
