About Lewes Lighthouses Lighthouse
The Lewes Lighthouses, specifically the Delaware Breakwater Range Rear (Greenhill) light, began service in 1881. This square pyramidal skeletal tower, constructed of steel with a central cylinder, guided vessels near Lewes, Delaware. Its operational period concluded in 1918, and by 1921, the tower had been relocated to Gasparilla Island in Florida. Although the lighthouse structure is no longer at its original Delaware site, remnants of the station persist. The keeper's house and oil house, located in the Great Marsh west of Lewes, remain partially visible.
Why it matters: The Lewes Lighthouses were essential for the Delaware Breakwater Range Rear, aiding ships in the Delaware Bay shipping lanes. The surviving support buildings offer a connection to the lives of lighthouse keepers.
