About Lernacken Lighthouse
Lernacken Lighthouse is a round, cylindrical concrete tower with a lantern and gallery, painted white. Built in 1952, it stands a short distance north of the eastern end of the Öresund Bridge-Tunnel, near Malmö. The structure stands 6 meters tall, with its focal height at 30 meters. It was designed to emit an extinguished light, a characteristic it held from its first lighting in 1952 until its decommissioning. The lighthouse's geographic range was 15.3 nautical miles.
Why it matters: This lighthouse became obsolete and was decommissioned in 1999 following the completion of the Öresund Bridge-Tunnel, illustrating how major infrastructure can redefine navigation needs.
