Lennard Island Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Lennard Island Lighthouse
First lit in 1904, Lennard Island Lighthouse is a 18-meter-tall cylindrical fiberglass tower located at the entrance to Clayoquot Sound. Its design features a flared top and bottom, housing a red lantern and gallery. The structure replaced an earlier wooden building. The keeper's house on the island burned down in 1927 and was subsequently rebuilt. The lighthouse emits a white flash every 10 seconds. The site is accessible to the public, but the tower remains closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is a key aid for vessels navigating the entrance to Clayoquot Sound, a significant passage on the British Columbia coast. Its construction using prefabricated, helicopter-lifted fiberglass components was an innovative approach for remote locations.
