About Île Verte Lighthouse
Also known as: Île Verte (Green Island)
Constructed from stone in 1809, this cylindrical lighthouse stands 17 meters tall and is painted white, with a red lantern room. It displays a white light, flashing once every 5 seconds, visible for 12.3 nautical miles. The lighthouse is situated on the north side of Île Verte, approximately 2.5 km from its ferry terminal. This structure is Canada's third oldest lighthouse, remaining operational and maintained by the Canadian Coast Guard. The original fog signal building on the grounds now houses historical displays, and former keeper's houses have been converted into a bed and breakfast.
Why it matters: As Canada's third oldest lighthouse, Île Verte offers a direct connection to the country's early navigation history along the St. Lawrence River.
