About Île Sainte-Marie Lighthouse
Also known as: Île Sainte-Marie (St. Mary Islands)
Built in 1913, the Île Sainte-Marie Lighthouse is a cylindrical concrete tower standing 7 meters tall. The hexagonal structure is painted white, with a red lantern and gallery. It is situated on an island guiding vessels into the northeastern Gulf of Saint Lawrence. The lighthouse became inactive in 1981 and has since been abandoned. The site is accessible to the public, though the tower itself is closed.
Why it matters: Its deactivation in 1981 ended a period of service guiding maritime traffic into a critical shipping lane. The lighthouse is currently endangered, highlighting the need for preservation of this navigational heritage.
